Go catch a big fish

“Can you help me with my Chinese homework?”

That question led to the start of tutoring an 8 year old. Looking back at today’s amk outreach, he taught me a few things. I admit I was a bit hesitant to help him at first knowing that it wasn’t my strength in the language. However, it got me reflecting that whether or not we might deem ourselves as “not capable” or “under-qualified” to do the task, ultimately, it is to show God’s love to the people who needed it the most. In His way, He guides and aids us during the situation.

So as I taught the boy how to write his essay, this quote came to mind, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

It was rather tempting to just write the essay for him or to throw the answers directly at him, and given that he was being reluctant to do it, made it almost slant towards “giving him the fish”. But I knew it can’t be done in the long run if any of us doesn’t visit the boy’s home. To add to the mix, the person tagged to me had a slightly different teaching methodology and tried to push other ideas, making the poor boy so lost and losing focus.

But the end of this small tutoring, I’m thankful he can “fish” for some small catch using google translate (though in my opinion was not the most favourable method). Teaching the boy made me realised that parenting probably have a similar thread to this situation and I guess there is some truth in it.

And though our actions might not amount to something big to this little boy, hopefully it is a step closer for him to grow to be more independent and catch an even bigger fish.

Though distances apart

“In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers.
In reality a few years’ difference
in the dates of our births,
a few more miles between certain houses,
the choice of one university instead of another…
the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting
–any of these chances might have kept us apart.
But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances.
A secret master of ceremonies has been at work.
Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have
chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends,
“Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.”
The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste
in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals
to each of us the beauties of others.”
– C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
I admit, I felt like I was being tossed up in the sea.
Sighing became the form of language spoken.
Knowing that it was just not worth it at all.
Though we were distance apart, your concern showed.
And when the words surfaced, it hits to the soul.
Knowing that the seed has taken root, encouraging where it needs.
Thank you my friends for today and for what you said.

The New Lady

Lord, let me be a woman in this generation that wants to be known for following Jesus. Allow these beautiful truths to sink deep down into my heart and to those around too. Amen.

“She will truly have His heart and His eyes to see sons and daughters when she looks at His people.

She will be a doer of the word and not a hearer only.

She will refuse to judge and condemn and do her best to love people back to wholeness.

She will be a fountain of mercy and grace and one who will breathe life back into dry bones.

She will know that it is the love of God that breaks every yoke.

She will be a living epistle of love and humility and will demonstrate the scriptures with kindness and gentleness and compassion.

She will give credit where credit is due.

She will point others to Him. She will give Him all the glory. All of the honor. All of the credit.

She will understand fully- the truth that is this. If it were not for the grace of God- there go I.

She will reach to the back row and encourage and minister to the hearts of the women who can’t get past the grief and sorrow of their own life.

She will look past circumstances and situations and appearances that look different than her own to see daughters of the living God who have yet to discover their worth.

The new church lady is looking for opportunities to be a blessing- instead of looking for her own opportunities.

The new church lady knows that the only way up is down. She knows that “humility isn’t thinking less of yourself but it is thinking of yourself less.”

Graciousness is her hallmark.

Gratitude is her beauty treatment.

She is a woman of her word.

She is a worshipper. In spirit and in truth.

She is a prayer warrior and holds trust from others as sacred.

She is supportive of others and is not an opportunist.

She understands that to become the Proverbs 31 woman- you can’t skip chapters 1-30.

She is fully aware of her own shortcomings and seeks Him daily for His love and guidance.

She recognizes hopelessness and worthlessness in others and speaks life.

She is an excellent listener. She listens with her head and her heart. She hears what is not being said.

She is a lifter. An encourager. A hope giver.

She forgives- fully.

She knows that the same grace that was made available to her- is also available to everyone else.

She does not gossip. She does not constantly brag or boast. She speaks blessing.

She sees the best. Believes the best. Hopes the best.

She places a high value on God’s people.

She invests in the greatest investment in the world.
She is known for what she stands for.”

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, good fruit, impartial and sincere. ~ James 3:17

This illustration puts CS Lewis’ message quite simply. It kinda reminded me of the lighthouse everything skit and about what Jesus has done. Credits to Zen Pencils for this comic strip style!
